Lasers For Your Mouth

That headline might have been a little bit perplexing- but hopefully it got you to take a look at this. I know I have had those ulcers in my mouth ever since I was a child, never really knew why except that they were painful. As I got older they seemed to be related to general health and eating right. But when Dr Samer Othman told me about this laser that could take care of them- I knew I had to get more info.

MIWM: What exactly are the different types of mouth sores?

SO: There are two types of “sores” commonly associated with the mouth. There’s the cold sore and there’s the ulcer. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. They are highly contagious, especially when an open sore is presents and can last for weeks. These sores are most commonly found around your lips. Aphthous ulcers, on the other hand, occur most commonly inside the mouth. They are believed to be caused by an autoimmune response and most commonly present immediately before an illness or during times of high stress.  Both of these sores can be taken care of by a dental laser.

MIWM: Stress- now you’re speaking my language. I’m always stressed! What does this laser do?

SO: The dental laser works by specifically targeting tissues in the body by honing in the frequency of that tissue. For treatment of cold sores, the laser is placed over the area for a period of about 90 seconds. That is enough time to kill the virus presents in the sore, resulting in a much faster healing time and a longer period between outbreaks. After 4-6 treatments, the virus can be completely eradicated. Lasers are the only known EFFECTIVE treatment of cold sores. Abriva, the over the counter cream that you place on cold sores, is known to slightly reduce the time period of an outbreak, however it does no kill the virus, nor does it reduce the time period between outbreaks. For the treatment of aphthous ulcers, the laser essentially cauterizes the nerve endings in the area, effectively numbing the area until the ulcer heals, at which point normal feel will return.

MIWM: Hm, that’s interesting- especially since we see so many commercials out there from Abriva and other treatments saying they can take care of these issues. This is really kind of cool! I didn’t know you could totally cure this. What else can you tell us about these lasers?

SO: Both of these treatments do not require needles and are quite comfortable for the patient. Both treatments only take approximately 90 seconds to complete, so they are quick and easy! Each treatment is only $49 and no appointment is needed!
