Fun time for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Clay, play dough, model magic, or air dry clay are great for the young toddler/preschooler to work with. Put the clay in a toddler or preschooler’s hands and let the child squish and squeeze it. The squeezing will help develop strong fingers for drawing and coloring and eventually writing! Next show the child how to form a ball out of the clay. If you have colored clay like red and yellow model magic, give the child a little of both and ask the child to make orange clay by squeezing the two colors together.  Next try blue and yellow clay to make green! Now you have four colors. To make a simple turtle teach the child how to make a ball out of green clay. Flatten one side of the green clay ball. Set to one side. Teach the child to roll a sausage shape out of red clay. Divide it into four sections to make four legs. Attach to the flat bottom of the green ball. Roll out the yellow clay into a short hotdog. Bend into an “s” shape to make the head and neck and a bit to attach to the green shell between the two front legs. Attach. Pinch off pieces of orange clay. Form small balls of orange clay. Flatten into small disc-like circles to decorate the back of the turtle shell with.
