A Love/Hate Relationship: Binging On Netflix

It’s a little damp outside, the threat of rain is there, and I’m feeling just a tad sleepy. But I have work that needs to be done as well. This is when the lure of Netflix and Amazon Prime reels me in, and the next thing I know I’ve binge watched 5 hours of tv and going for more when it’s 1 am in the morning.

Whoops.

I think it’s happening more and more here lately, we’re feeling a little bit bummed or tired or just not wanting to be around people. And with services like Netflix and Amazon Prime now putting out really good quality original tv shows, or old favorites, or new favorites that are in an off season from tv or WHATEVER IT IS it’s just so dang easy to stay at home.

I have to wonder, does it make us more or less productive? I find it only helps my production when I have it on the tv ahead of me and laptop in hand- or, er- lap. But if I’m watching on my laptop- done son. Can’t get anything else done.

So you come home, have a glass of wine or perhaps tea (tonight it’s tea for me), settle down with your remotes and get snuggled in to the chair.

And then you have that perfect magical moment, after scouring and pressing the next button for what feels like an hour: ” OMG Patrick Dempsey early days in ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ is on Netflix?! WINNING!” All for that ever so disappointing:

” We’re having trouble playing this title right now. Please try again later or select a different title.”

Oh- the disappointment! You were already feeling let down by life in general, and now Netflix has broken your heart, too.

But then you find some program and it comes on the tv and you’re allowed to escape your troubles without the calories of binging out with friends on food or alcohol and you leave perhaps just as euphoric- without the ugliness of a hangover or full stomach. Except, perhaps, a little sleepy from lack of sleep- but that can’t be nearly as harmful, right? At least drunk texting doesn’t happen.

Curious, does this ever happen to y’all? I know I feel like I have TOTALLY rediscovered my tv. But as much as I love it, there are times when I hate it. I hate it when I can’t find what I’m looking for, I hate when what I find can’t be played, and I hate when I don’t get enough sleep.

Not sounding too different from other types of binging now, is it?

Love to all y’all,

Molly
